We take the monthly cost of a plan over 2 years, add any connection fees, and add the cost of a modem (if BYO is not allowed). We then deduct any savings from cash back or account credit joining incentives. These are the only joining incentives we factor in - some providers give away consumables, but we exclude these as their value is subjective to each individual. We also exclude plans where savings can be made by purchasing multiple services from one single provider (like broadband + power packages).
Because this is a more accurate way to compare apples with apples. When providers offer join up incentives it can make plans appear cheaper than they really are. When comparing plans over a longer period the true cost comes out.
The effective monthly cost is the actual 2 year cost divided by 24 months. The effective monthly price takes into account all relevant factors such as connection fees, modem costs (if BYO is not allowed), and any joining incentives. This gives us a more accurate way to compare the true cost of plans.
